Homestay in Juneau ニアリーさん家 アラスカteacher's training
アラスカ日記の続きです。今日は長いよ。
ホームステイ先のご家族が読んでくれるそうなので、英語も併記します。(
ちょっと表現ずれます 違ってても目をつぶってください）
This is a continuation of my diary in Juneau.
6月2日、夜21：39着でジュノーに到着。（もう一ヶ月も前の話だ〜すいません）
今回の旅、キャンプ以外の日々の滞在先はなんとホームステイ！
キャンプ講座の講師、ニアリーご夫妻が「日本からわざわざ来るならうちに泊まったら？」と誘ってくださった。
「ホントですか〜？ 是非、お願いします」と遠慮もためらいもなく即答し、ご好意に甘えた2週間。北米ホームステイ歴13件のわたしだが間違いなく最高の宿だった
I stayed in a wonderful family's house in Juneau for 2 weeks.
The father of the family is Mr. John Neary, the instructor of the training camp. They invited me to stay and the stay was so wonderful that I didn’t want to go back.
ジョンさん、ジュディさん、高校生のアイリスちゃん１６歳の３人家族。
The family members were John, his wife, Judy and their daughter, Iris who is 16 years old.
ジョンさんは日本の林野庁みたいな組織、US Forest Serviceに勤めて25年。
大工、庭師、釣り師、調理、カヤック、なんでもこなす。アフリカへ一年に一回環境教育系のボランティアに行くのを人生の楽しみにしている。スリムだが良く食べる渋いおやじ。ブッシュ嫌い 滞在中わたしの下着も黙々と干して、たたんでくれた。
John works for the US Forest Service for long time. He is a very nice instructor who has great capacity for leadership and also, ideal husband. He does everything such as cooking, carpentering, gardening, fishing and kayaking. He even hung my laundry out to dry. He goes to Africa once a year to help and advise the park management, so there was much African stuff in his house. I learned a lot from him.
奥さんのジュディさんは、シアトル出身の日系３世。
おじいさんおばあさんは１８９０年にアメリカに渡ったそうな。
自分のルーツである日本に興味いっぱいだが、まだ訪れたことはなく、日本語も話さない。何か単語を知ってますか？と聞くと、「やかましい」と言われた。（笑）
これは、わたしがやかましかったのではなく、ホントに知ってる唯一の単語だったらしい。「やかましい」は繰り返しお母さんが言っていたそうで、良く覚えているとのこと。
見た目は日本人だけれど、話すとアメリカ人なので、すごく面白かった。
His wife Judy was the third-generation Japanese American, who was born in Seattle.
Her grandparents moved to the US in 1890’s. Although she’s never been to Japan, she in interested in Japan very much. She didn’t speak Japanese and the funny story was that I asked her a question “Do you know some Japanese words?”, She answered, “ “Yakamashii !(Noisy!) I was surprised to hear, but that turned out to be the word she remembered, actually. It was interesting because she looked like Japanese but, once she started speaking, I could tell she was American. I enjoyed talking with her very much.
娘のアイリスちゃんは、わたしのアメリカ人のティーンエージャーのイメージを払拭する存在だった。
わたしのティーンエージャーのイメージは、たいてい体にぴったりのヨガ用みたいなキャミソールに尻がぴったりのジャージを着ていてスケッチャーズのスニーカーを履いており、舌ったらずで、like, だのcoolだの連発するものだったが、、アイリスは違った！
そもそも三つ編みだし、服はいつも、汗をかいても乾きが早い山用のウエアだ。声まで落ち着いている。
そして彼女は 夏休みだというのに超忙しい生活をしていて、午前中は「高校生のための科学講座」に通い、毎日浜辺で顕微鏡を使い微生物を観察。先生の指導方法を夕飯時に非難。午後は2週間後マイアミで行われるなわとび全アメリカ選手権に出場のため、21時ごろまで練習に行っていた。
おまけに8月からなんと自らの意思で一年間プラハに留学するらしく、たまげたティーンエージャーである。
Their daughter, Iris was the girl who swept away my typical image of teenager. I had an image that teenagers are usually less calm and have high voice and often use the word “like” or “cool.” However, Iris was not.
She has composure mind and smart! Although it was start week of summer vacation, she kept her self busy. She went science camp in the morning and training the rope jumping in the afternoon to participate the national tournament in Miami.
Also, she is going to study in Prague for a year as an exchange student. I thought what a remarkable girl she was!
ある日夕飯を食べているときに、「アイリスみたいな賢い高校生初めてですよ。スーパー高校生ですね〜」とわたしが持ちかけたら、
お父さんのジョンは、「カナコ、何がつらいって、アイリスが中学生の時に、もしかしたら自分より子供のほうが頭がいいかもしれないって気づいちゃったんだよね。その時はさすがにつらかったよ。」と一言。
そこへ母さんのジュディが一言
「あたしなんて、あの子が幼稚園のときに自分より頭いいって気づいちゃったわよ、遅いわね気づくの」と言って爆笑した。
One night, when we were having dinner, John told me that “It is hard if you noticed that your child is smarter than yourself. I realized when Iris was in Junior high.”
Judy said, “It is late. John. I noticed when she was in kindergarten.”
That was funny, but I also thought she was outstanding.
家に家族がいるときは必ずご飯を全員でそろって食べる、テレビは見ないで情報はラジオか新聞で得る。という暮らしだったそうな。
「教育にこだわってたわけじゃないのよ、テレビやおもちゃが限られていたから アイリスは「遊び方」を考えて遊んでたの。それが良かったのかもね」と言っていた。
They eat most meal together and they usually get information from radio or papers instead of TV. That was the way they live. John told me that “we didn’t very much care about her education, but she always think and create how to play when she was a young child. That was one of the good things about her.”
なるほど納得してしまった。
I see. That was the point.
これが二アリーさんの家。 注文住宅で25年前に建てたそう。とても新しく見える。
This is the house I stayed. It looks new, they lived this house for many years, though.
おうちの前は海。後日わたしはこの家からザトウクジラを見て大感動。
家からクジラが見えるなんて、スゴすぎ。
Their house is by the ocean. One day, I saw a humpback whale was breathing.
Can you imagine that you can see a whale from your house? It is wonderful, isn’t it?
とにかくとても楽しいおうちに泊まっていたのでした。
I had very good time in their house.
