古都の晩秋、桜狂い咲き 季節
Late Autumn blossom
展覧会が開かれているので、頻繁に街の北側へ行く。
現在の街の中心部から北に伸びる“ブリッジ･ストリート”
“モードリン・ストリート”。 この道が、湾曲するケム川と
交差する辺りの街並みは、ケンブリッジで最も古く、
中世以前は、街の中心だった。
I have been to the north part of Cambridge many times recently because I am having an exhibition there. Bridge Street and Magdalene Street cross River Cam. The buildings on these streets are the oldest in Cambridge. This part was the centre of town until medieval times.
この道筋を歩いていたら、桜が咲いているのを見つけた。
When I was walking in this part of town, I found a few cherry blossoms in broom.
晩秋の低い太陽は建物にさえぎられ、陰になっているが、
確かに花が開き、一部はすでに散っている。 もう、12月に
なろうとしているのに、桜の“狂い咲き”である。
The sun was low and the cherry tree was in shade.
建物の北側に植えられた桜樹で、日当たりは良くない。
葉は1枚も残っていないのに、枝の所々で開花している。
冷たい風を感じながら、不思議な光景を見た。
The tree is on the north side of a building. All leaves are gone. I was watching those blossoms standing in cold wind.

石壁に石榴の実が鈴なり 植物
Pomegranates Jewel of Winter 537
もうすぐ11月も終わり、師走になる。 今日もまた、
素晴らしい秋晴れになった。 明日から始まる展覧会
“チャリティー・イベント”打ち合わせのため街に出かけ、
その後、セント・ジョーンズ・カレッジの中を歩いた。
It has been a fine day. I went to Kaetus Centre for preparation of a charity event at my exhibition that will start tomorrow. I walked to town afterwards and went into St. John's College.
並木の“西洋菩提樹”は、ほとんど葉を散らし、空が
明るくなったが、構内の“樫”は、まだ黄葉を秋風に
ひらめかせている。
The lime trees on the avenue had lost most of their leaves. The oak tree at St. John's still has many leaves on.
古いカレッジ建造物の壁際に植えられた“潅木”に、
見慣れない実がたくさんついていた。
I noticed a bush on the old wall that had many unusual fruits.
近寄ってみたら、なんと“石榴”である。 イギリスでは
めったに見ない木で、しかも、こんなに実をつけるとは、
知らなかった。 だれも採らないので、実がはじけている。
きっと、野鳥たちの餌になるのだろう。
When I went closer, I found they were pomegranates. It is rare to see pomegranates here in England. The fruits are left on the tree.
実家の裏手の寺に、石榴の木があったのを想い出した。
古い建物と石榴の組み合わせは、なんとなく風情がある。
Suddenly I remembered there was a pomegranates tree at a temple near my parents' house. I felt the combination of pomegranate tree and old stone wall was rather poetic.

“彩雲”になった飛行機雲 自然

先回のフライト話しのつづき、、、
搭乗機はスカンジナビア半島上空を南下している。
地上に積もる雪がだんだん少なくなってきた。
Sequel to my flight story,,,
The airplane was flying southward over Scandinavia. The snow on the mountains below was getting thinner.
丘陵地帯には、不思議な起伏が見える。 どのように
形成されたのだろうか？
I saw curious dappled pattern on the hills. I wondered how the landscape was made.
搭乗機は、さらに南下を続け、“北海”洋上に到った。
雲に覆われ、海面は見えないが、雲海が美しく、
2重の層になっている。
We reached the North Sea. The sea was covered with two layers of clouds.
到着まで2時間を切った。 この辺りまでくると、上空を
走る飛行機雲が、急に多くなる。
Two more hours to the destination, there were many vapor trails around us.
同じ高度で飛ぶ他の航空機とも頻繁に出会う。
And I spotted some airplanes flying at the same altitude as ours.
ここまで明瞭に飛行機雲が残っていることは珍しい。
ヨーロッパの中心部に戻ってきた実感が湧いてくる。
Lots of trails left in the sky reminded me that I was back in the busy sky in Europe.
飛行機雲の一部が、彩雲になって輝いているのを
見つけた。 以上は11月上旬、日本から欧州に
飛んだときの映像と話題であるが、来週始めには、
再び日本に向かって飛ぶ。 航程の半分以上が
夜間飛行になるので、またオーロラと出会えるだろう。
One part of the trail was iridescent. This was my flight when I came back to England from Japan in the beginning of November. I am going to fly again next week. I expect to see the northern lights during the night flight that last more than a half of the whole flight.

北極海洋上からノール岬へ 旅行
North Cape in Blue Twilight 535
11月17日“北極圏月光フライト”話しのつづき、、、
搭乗機は、シベリア大陸を抜けて、北極海洋上に出た。
飛行ルートのモニター画面も、北半球画面に変わる。
Sequel to my flight story on Nov. 17th,,,
The airplane flew through Siberia and reached the Arctic Ocean. A map of the north sphere was on display.
ちょうど航程の半分である。 現地時間は午後2時前、
時はゆっくりと過ぎるが、空が暗くなり、機内は照明を
落とし、夜間飛行のようなムードが漂う。
This is the half way of my journey to Europe. The local time was 2pm. But the sky was dimmer and the light was turned down on board.
ボーイング747型機は、空間に余裕がある機体なので、
時々機内を散歩する。 後尾の窓から、南の空を眺めた。
I like Boeing747 because of its spacious interior. I walked to the back and saw the south sky from the window.
搭乗機が、大幅に北寄りのコースをとっているため、
真昼の太陽が南の地平線に沈んでいる。
As we were flying on the Arctic route, the sun was setting in the south.
最北の地点を過ぎ、搭乗機は緩やかに南下を始めた。
空は徐々に明るさを増してくる。
We started to fly southbound. The sky was getting lighter.
やがて、ノルウェー北端の地“ノール岬”に達した。
We reached the north end of Norway. This is the North Cape.
雲が切れて、独特のフィヨルドの海岸線が見えてきた。
I saw fjord in blue twilight.
さらに南下を続け、ノルウェーとスウェーデンの国境線
辺りを飛び続けた。 地上は真白な雪に覆われている。
We kept flying south. The mountains were completely covered with snow.
日本の山や、シベリア東部の山のような、険しさはない。
氷河に削られた山肌が、柔らかい陰影をつくる。 つづく、、

These mountains are not steep like those in Japan or East Siberia. The slopes that had been shaved by glacier are gentler and they make shades with softer lines.

“新英語学習法”映像収録 留学
New English Learning Method 534
日曜の午後、グランチェスター、ティー・ガーデン敷地にある
“オチャード・ハウス”に、英語を学ぶ日本人学生が招かれた。
事の発端は、ティー・ガーデンのオーナーで、カラン式英語
学習法の著者で、ロンドンの語学学校“カラン・スクール”の
創立者であるカレン氏が、この家の住人であり、彼が最近
書き上げた“新英語学習法”への興味から、私が、撮影協力を
申しでた事に因る。
Sunday afternoon, a group of Japanese language students were invited to Orchard House in Grantchester. The owner of the house is Mr.Callen who is the founder of Callen method and English language school. He recently finished writing a textbook of the new learning method.
カレン氏は、古いグランチェスター仲間で、この数年、彼が
執筆をしていた“新学習法”への意見を時々求められていた。
ついに完成し、実際にこの学習システムを、映像に収めて
みようと言うことになった。 このシステムに必要だったのは、
2人だけだったが、結局、8人の学生が集まってくれた。
撮影は2時間ほどで終わり、素晴らしい映像資料ができた。
夕方から、“オチャード・ハウス”で、賑やかな茶会になった。
Mr. Callen is my old Grantchester friend. He has often told me about the new method he was writing. Now he completed the textbook and wants to film the scenes the students are actually learning using this method. Eight students voluntarily turned up although only two students were required. When the filming was done in two hours, we were invited for afternoon tea in the kitchen of Orchard House.
この家は、かつて詩人“ルパート・ブルック”が下宿人として
住み、E．M．フォースターなどの作家たちも頻繁に泊まった。
これは、ブルックの寝室で、彼がいた100年前と変わらない
状態で保存されている。 一般公開はしていない。
This is the house where the poet Rupert Brook once lodged and visited by his friends frequently such as E,M.Forster,Virginia Woolf. This is the bedroom Rupert Brook slept 100years ago. Nothing has been changed since then. This room is not open to public.
お茶の後、カレン氏自ら、学生たちを案内して、100年前の
グランチェスター･ライフを解説してくれた。
After the tea time, Mr. Callen showed the house to the students himself and gave a lecture about rural life in those days.
全てが終わって、帰る頃は、ティー・ガーデンに夕闇が迫り、
ティー・ルームの灯りが、煌々と庭に洩れていた。
By the time we left the orchard, the tea garden was in the dusk of the evening.

“カヤック・パドラー”との会話 自然
The Kayak Paddler
数日前、美しく晴れ上がった午後、グランチェスターの
丘に立ってメドーを眺めた。 青空の下、黄葉した木々や
釣人など、長閑で、明るい秋の日が映えていた。
A few days ago, I was standing on the Grantchester hill. It was a fine autumn day. The meadows were quiet and I enjoyed the scene with the yellow leaves and an angler.
丘から川辺に下りたとき、1艇の“カヤック”が街の方から、
グランチェスターに向かってやってきた。
When I walked down the hill, I noticed a kayak coming on the river towards Grantchester.
“カヤック”は、川面を滑るように進み、あっと言う間に
私の前を通り過ぎ、上流に消えた。
The kayak passed me and disappeared towards upstream.
爽やかな微風が心地よく、川に沿って散策を続けた。
I walked on the path along the river feeling light breeze.
しばらくしたら、“カヤック”が上流から戻ってきて、
私の前で、艇を停めた。 私たちは、川面と岸とで、
しばらく会話を交わし、美しい晩秋の風景を愛でた。
彼は、私の撮る写真に興味があるとのことだったので、
私のサイト・アドレスを伝えた。
The kayak came back from the upper stream. When he saw me, he slowed down and paddled towards me. After exchanging some conversation, I gave him my website detail.
サイトを見た彼から、メールが届いた。 「私は、秋晴の日、
グランチェスターで出会った“カヤック・パドラー”です。」
こんな出だしのメールには、サイトを楽しんでくれたそうで、
素敵なコメントが綴られていた。 彼に展覧会開催中の
案内と、イベントの招待メールを返信した。
Today, I received an e-mail from him. It started like this. 'I am the Kayak paddler who you met on the The Cam close to Grantchester'. And, he says that he enjoyed my web site. I sent an invitation to my exhibition back at once.

黄金色、西洋菩提樹並木路 季節
Golden Avenue
現在、ケンブリッジ市内のやや北側で展覧会を開催中で、
南側のわが家からは、南北に走る“クィーンズ・ロード”を
通って、会場に向かう。 この辺りの落葉状況を見ながら
日々、秋の進行を知る。
I am having an exhibition in the north side of town at the moment. I live south of Cambridge. So I drive to the opposite side of town via Queen's Road to get there. Every time I pass this avenue I see the progress of season.
この道の東側には、西洋菩提樹の並木が1ｋｍ以上続く。
The east side of the road is lined with lime trees for about 1km.
毎年、この季節、西洋菩提樹の葉は、黄色に変わり、晩秋の
傾いた陽を浴びて、黄金色に輝く。
Every autumn the lime leaves turn yellow and glows golden when the low autumn sun shines.
ちょうど、黄葉から落葉に変わる季節で、日毎に葉を散らし、
枯れ枝の間から、青空が覗いてきた。
The leaves started falling and I can see the blue sky among the branches.
道路は、ケム川と平行に伝統的なカレッジ群の裏手を走り、
1部は西洋菩提樹が2重に植えられている。 晩秋の11月、
この樹間は、美しい散歩道になる。 今日の午後、ちょうど
晴れたので、車を停め、黄葉と落葉の道を歩いた。
The avenue runs parallel to River Cam at the back of the old colleges. In some part lime trees are planted on both sides of the foot path. This afternoon I parked my car and walked in the golden avenue for a while.
天気は変わり易く、風もやや強くなる。 黄葉が輝くのは、
あと僅か、来週の終わりには、ほとんど散ってしまうだろう。
The weather is changing and it is going to be very windy this week. I think the golden leaves will last only a few days more, none would be left at the end of next week.

傾いた陽を浴びて、黄金色に輝く。
Every autumn the lime leaves turn yellow and glows golden when the low autumn sun shines.
ちょうど、黄葉から落葉に変わる季節で、日毎に葉を散らし、
枯れ枝の間から、青空が覗いてきた。
The leaves started falling and I can see the blue sky among the branches.
道路は、ケム川と平行に伝統的なカレッジ群の裏手を走り、
1部は西洋菩提樹が2重に植えられている。 晩秋の11月、
この樹間は、美しい散歩道になる。 今日の午後、ちょうど
晴れたので、車を停め、黄葉と落葉の道を歩いた。
The avenue runs parallel to River Cam at the back of the old colleges. In some part lime trees are planted on both sides of the foot path. This afternoon I parked my car and walked in the golden avenue for a while.
天気は変わり易く、風もやや強くなる。 黄葉が輝くのは、
あと僅か、来週の終わりには、ほとんど散ってしまうだろう。
The weather is changing and it is going to be very windy this week. I think the golden leaves will last only a few days more, none would be left at the end of next week.

コベント・ガーデン、クリスマス 季節
Covent Garden Xmas
コベント・ガーデン地区にある友人のオフィスを訪ねた。
つき合いが30年になる古い友人だが、彼のライフ・スタイルは
今も変わらない。 その間に、コベント・ガーデン・マーケットは
大きく様変わりした。
I went to see an old friend at his office near Covent Garden. We have known each other for about 30 years. His life style hasn't changed at all but Covent Garden has.
広場の一角に大きなクリスマス・ツリーが聳え、マーケットの
到るところに、クリスマスらしい飾りや、照明が施されている。
雨上がりの石畳が、光を反射して、より明るい。
A large Christmas tree was set up and the market was decorated and illuminated lavishly everywhere.
古い倉庫街に出た。 ここは20年前のクリスマス時期に
展覧会を開いていた懐かしい場所である。 ここも、少しづつ、
変化を続け、今は洒落た店が林立する街並みになった。
I went to a street where old warehouses have been transformed into trendy shops and galleries. It used to be a quiet corner when I had an exhibition at Christmas time 20 years ago.
今年は、面白いクリスマス・イルミネーションが道の真ん中に
浮かんで並んでいる。 舞台装置のような燭台が、不思議な
雰囲気を醸しだす。 さすが、芝居の街“コベント・ガーデン”だ。
The Christmas illuminations float in the air. They help to create theatrical atmosphere in the street.
最後に、コベント・ガーデンからチャーリングクロスに戻った。
テムズ川に架かる橋から、ケンブリッジに戻る前の一時、
夜景を眺めた。
I went back to Charring Cross Road. I stood on the bridge for a while before set off the journey back to Cambridge and watched the night scene.
セント･ポール寺院の周辺に、たくさんのクレーンが夜空に
伸びているのが見える。 開発が盛んに行われているらしい。
ロンドンの街並みも、ダイナミックに変わりつつある。
I saw many tower cranes around St. Paul's Cathedral. London scene is changing rapidly.
雨上がりだからなのか？ ロンドンだからなのか？ 11月下旬、
晩秋なのに、ほとんど寒さを感じない。 ケンブリッジを出るとき、
冷たい雨が降っていたので、ジャケットの下に薄いセーターを
着込んだ。 その所為で、むしろ暑く感じる。 ロンドン滞在は、
僅か数時間だったが、楽しく充実していた。
I put on a thin sweater under a jacket before I left Cambridge as I thought it was going to be a cold rainy day. But it wasn't and I didn't feel cold at all.

雨上がりのロンドン・クリスマス 風物
London after Rain
今日の午後、アート・ディーラーに会うため、降りしきる
雨の中、ロンドンに向かった。 依頼された版画作品を届け、
ロンドン・アート市場の最新動向を聞かせてもらいながら
時を過ごし、気がついたら、雨が完全に上がっていた。
I went to London to see an art dealer in the afternoon. It was a rainy day. I handed my print works to the dealer, and then we talked about recent movement of art market for a while.
午後5時、すっかり日が暮れてから、久しぶりのロンドンを、
歩いた。 トラファルガー広場の噴水にも照明が美しく映える。
5pm. I noticed the rain had stopped and it was already dark outside. I walked to the Trafalgar Square.
リージェント・ストリートのクリスマス・イルミネーションは、
去年と同じようなアレンジだが、今年は雪の結晶と“青”が
テーマのようだ。 赤い ロンドン・バスとの対比が良い。
Christmas illumination in Regent Street is similar to last year's. The theme is snow crystal. The blue and red buses make nice contrast.
ピカデリー、“プリンセス・アーケード”のセラドン・ギャラリー
にも立ち寄った。 オーナーに来年の“CUPカレンダー”を
プレゼントし、ここでも、久しぶりの情報交換をした。
I went to Celadon gallery in Princess Arcade, Piccadilly. I presented my CUP Calendar to the owner and exchanged latest news.
私の小型の版画作品が数点、クリスマス飾りのついた
ウィンドーに展示されている。
I saw some small print works of mine in the show window.
その後、友人と会うため、ピカデリーから、コベント・ガーデンに
向かった。 途中のレスター広場で、例年だったら、クリスマス前の
この時期に、いつも設置されていた“メリー・ゴーランド”が、
今年は見当たらない？と思ったら、コベント・ガーデンにあった。
Then I went to Covent Garden to see a friend. The merry go round was set up in Covent Garden this year, not in Leicester square as before.
平日の夕、しかも雨上がりなので、人影は少ない。 つづく、、、

モダンな会場で展覧会始まる 行事
Exhibition in High Tech Building
週末に、展示作業を終え、今週から、ケンブリッジでの
展覧会が始まった。 タイトルは“Images of Cambirdge"、
ケンブリッジの写真が、約200点壁面に展示されている。
My exhibition started this week in Cambridge. The title is 'Images of Cambridge' about 200 photos are on display.

モダンで、美しい会場である。 場所はケンブリッジ大学、
“ニュー・ホール”の中にある嘉悦センター“フォイエ”。
最新デザインの建物の中には、様々な近代的施設があり、
日本関係のイベントを通じ、私にとっても、馴染みの場所、
この会場で、本格的な個展を開くのは、初めてである。
Kaetsu Centre 'foyer' is part of New Hall, Cambridge University and provides modern settings for many cultural events. This is the first occasion for me to have a one-man show here.
外が暗くなってからの会場も雰囲気が良い。 2007年の
“ケンブリッジ・ユニバーシティー・プレス・カレンダー”に
使用された写真なども展示されている。
The photos that had been selected for Cambridge University Press Calendar 2007 are also exhibited.

展覧会の会期は、12月1日までであるが、最後の
11月30日（木）と、12月1日（金）には、新たに
シルクスクリーン版画作品なども展示に加え、特別の
