志村博の“Cambridge Express”

私がケンブリッジに帰着するとほぼ同時に、
気温が上がり始めたらしい。 最高気温が
20度に達しなかった日々が、30度近くまで
上昇し、イギリスとしては異例の暑さになった。
畑野では麦が実りの季節を迎えている。



日中、晴天が広がり暑くなるが、日本の猛暑を
経験した後なので、むしろ涼しく感じる。 朝晩は
15度くらいまで気温が下がり、湿度も低いので、
不快感はない。 麦畑の脇には“ヤナギラン”が
咲いていた。



道端で、うす紫の球形に咲く花？を見つけた。



名前は忘れたが、カレッジの庭でよく見かけ、
我が庭にも欲しいと思っている野草？である。



今日の午後、ケンブリッジから南東約15kmの
村にアトリエを持つアーティストを訪ねた。



動物学的なテーマで創る、独特な手法の
ガラス工芸作品や、自然の形態やシンプルな
風景が題材の写真作品を発表している作家、
“トリー・ネーソン”さん。



「方舟」と名付けられた“トリー”のアトリエは、
素晴らしい。



中2階があって、寝室と仕事スペースを繋ぐ
渡り廊下は、3面ともガラス張りで真下も見える。

“トリー”の父上は、日本との事業をしていて、
よく東京へ行く。 私たちは、いつか“トリー”の
展覧会を日本で開催したいと思っている。

Tea Garden in Bloom　　1058



グランチェスター、ティー・ガーデン、
“ジ・オチャード”の林檎が花を咲かせている。

Apple trees have come into bloom at the tea garden "the Orchard" in Grantchester.



今日の午前中、私は“オチャード”にいた。
あいにくの雨模様だったが、昼前に一瞬、
薄日が差した。 出版社との打ち合わせが
終わったところだったので、パビリオンから
茶園に出た。

I have been to the Orchard this morning. It was wet day. When I had finished the meeting with an editor I saw the sun came out for a moment.



桜（カンザン）の枝は、ピンクの花が満開に
なって風に揺れている。 テーブルやイスは
まだ濡れていて、野外でお茶を飲んでいる人は、
見えない。

The Cherry blossom 'Kanzan’ is in full bloom and the branches were swinging in breeze. The tables and chairs were wet and nobody was seen in the garden.



雨上がりの園内を歩いていたら、食器を
返す棚に、常連の“フィンチ”と“ロビン”がいた。

A robin and a finch were on the rack where used dishes are returned.



暇そうに、食器が戻ってくるのを待っている。
今日は、まだこのお皿しかない。

They wait for the used dishes.



再び、パビリオンに戻って、展示してある
写真を入れ替えるための検討を始めた。

I went back to the pavilion. I am going to replace the photos on the walls.



その後、“オチャード”のオーナーでもある
ロビン・カラン氏と散歩に出た。

And then, I went out for a walk with Mr. Robin Callan who is the owner of the Orchard.



メドーを歩いている時、再び雨が降り始めた。

It started raining when we were walking on the meadow.



私たちは、カラン氏の自宅で、詩人ブルックが
かつて住んでいた”オチャード・ハウス”に戻り、
話を続けた。

We went back to Mr. Callan’s ‘Orchard House’ where the poet Rupert Brook once lived.



彼がいなかったら、このティー・ガーデン
“ジ・オチャード”は15年前に消滅していた。
伝統の茶園は奇跡的に宅地化から救われた。

The Orchard could have been varnished 15 years ago if he didn’t save it. The tradition was saved from a development.

Asiagraph in Tokyo　　855



日本に着いたら、CGアーティストの
河口洋一郎氏から招待状が届いていた。
明日から、秋葉原“UDX”で「ASIAGRAPH
2007 in Tokyo」が開かれる。 今宵、その
“オープニング・レセプション”に出席した。

I was invited to a reception for ‘Asiagraph 2007 in Tokyo’ at Akihabara UDX.



“ASIAGRAPH”とは、アジア地域で活躍する
ＣＧ分野の研究者や作家が集い交流を行う
国際的なイベントである。

Asiagraph is an international event where CG artists in Asia gather and exchange.



挨拶や授賞式に続き、センター・ステージで、
河口洋一郎氏のＣＧアート・パフォーマンスが、
行われた。

After the ceremony, there was CG art performance produced by Kawaguchi Youichirou.



ダンサーの動きや太鼓の音が、スクリーンに
投影されるＣＧ画像を変化させてゆく。

CG images on screen were changing as the dancer moved with music and drum sound.



グラフィカルな画像は、美しく洗練されている。
河口洋一郎氏は、私の大学の後輩であり、
氏が創り出す造形に接したら、大学時代や、
その時期に取り組んだ課題などを思い出した。

Kawaguchi studied at the same university as me. Some part of his works reminded me of those projects I had as a student.



会場内には、展示スペースがあり、様々な
ＣＧ作品や、先端技術などが紹介されている。

There were many installations of CG art and displays of new technology.



中でも、河口チームの作品コーナーが大きく、
異彩を放っている。

The Kawaguchi team had the largest space and the installation was the largest and distinguished.



スクリーンの前を歩くと、画像が反応して、
美しい波紋を生じさせる。

As I move in front of the screen, the pattern react to my movement.



動く場所や方向を感知して、瞬時に画像を
変化させるインスタレ―ション・アートは、
発想や技術と同時に、表現が重要である。

It is not only idea and skill but also the expression is important for this kind of installation art.



オープニングの後は、上階で“レセプション”が
開かれた。 その最後になって、突然会場に
山本寛斎氏が現れた。 河口氏が司会になって
話し始めた。

At the reception that was held later, Yamamoto Kansai arrived. Kawaguchi and Kansai started to talk.



終了時間が過ぎていたので、そろそろ帰ろうと
思っていたが、２人のやり取りが面白く、
つい引き込まれた。

I enjoyed listening to their conversation and stayed longer than I had intended to.



河口洋一郎氏と山本寛斎氏のダイナミックな
活動やその熱意を感じ、大いに刺激を受けた。

I was very much inspired by their dynamic way of life and activities.

今日の午前、グラフィック・デザイナーの勝井三雄氏を
渋谷区の自宅と隣接したオフィスに訪ねた。 去年の春、
六本木ヒルズクラブで会って以来である。 （06年3月6日）
勝井氏がデザインした野田弘志氏の豪華本を拝見したり、
いろいろな打ち合わせをした後、勝井氏が運転する車で、
六本木に向かった。 思えば、自宅ではなくオフィスの方で
会ったのは初めてかも知れない。 退出する間際、壁面の
鏡で自分を記念撮影した。

I visited Mr Katsui at his studio in Shibuya-ku. He showed me a book by Noda Hiroshi which Kausui had designed. Then he took me to Roppongi in his car



六本木で、午餐をしながら、久しぶりの話しが弾んだ。
そして、なんと、勝井氏は、私をあのミッドタウン・タワーの
“デザイン・ハブ”に伴った。 （07年4月22日ダイアリー）

After we had lunch, he took me to Design Hub in the Midtown Tower.



現在、“JAGDAポスター展”が開かれている。 1983年
以降のオリジナル・ポスターが約100点展示されている。
少し湾曲させた展示壁面や、光るパネルによる歴史の
説明も明快で美しい。

JAGDA poster Exhibition was on. More than 100 original posters after 1983 were exhibited in one place. I enjoyed watching posters displayed on a slightly curved wall and reading the history on illuminated panels.

“デザイン・ハブ”の中に、勝井氏が使うオフィスもあった。
若手スタッフの面々がデザイン作業をしている。 勝井氏は、
彼らにいくつか指示をしてから、その奥にある
プレゼンテーション用の部屋に案内してくれた。

He has another office in Design Hub. Young stuffs were working there.



全面の窓からは、つい数日前に歩いた東京・ミッドタウン
裏手の緑地が広がっている。 今日の東京は気温も上がり、
初夏の陽気である。 黄砂の影響らしく、青空がやや霞む。

We went to next room. Outside the window I looked over Midtown Garden I had walked a few days ago. It was a warm day. The sky was a little hazy because of the sand blown from china.

ケンブリッジは今日も晴。 午後、ロンドンに向かった。
いつもは車か、家の近くから長距離バスを使うのだが、
ケンブリッジ駅から、キングス・クロス駅行きの列車に
乗った。 イギリスで鉄道を使うのは、何年ぶりだろう！

It was a fine morning in Cambridge. I went to London in the afternoon by train. I always use my car or coach to go to London. Going to the railway station and getting on a train is very rare experience.



久しぶりの“鉄道の旅”は新鮮だった。 中澤慎一氏
作品展“Reflections”開催中のリージェント・パーク隣、
“ダイワ・ファンデーション・ジャパン・ハウス”に、夕方
着いた。 ロンドンも風が冷たい。

After enjoying the view from train, I arrived at Daiwa Foundation Japan House near Regent Park where Mr. Nakazawa's exhibition is being held.



会場で、プライベート・ビューとギャラリー・トークがあり、
私も、中澤氏の友人として紹介された。 “通訳”として、
ゲストたちとの会話に参加していたので、あまり撮影は
できなかったが、中澤氏独自の技法に興味津々の
ゲストからは、真剣で専門的な質問が集中した。

I attended the Private view and gallery talk. I was also introduced as Mr. Nakazawa's friend. Then, I was busy as an interpreter as there were many questions about Nakazawa's printing method.



イギリスで、中澤慎一氏の個展が開かれるのは、
今回が初めてで、中澤氏がイギリスに来るのも初めて。
彼とは作家仲間として長いつき合いで、今回の個展を、
去年日本で会った時から、楽しみにしていた。

This is his first exhibition in England and also his first visit to England. I have known him for a long time and I was looking forward to this event.



この“パーティー”には、ロンドンの古い友人たちも
招待されていたので、久々の旧交を温めた。 宴の後、
キングス・クロス駅に向かい、深夜、ケンブリッジに
戻ってきた。 雪が降るとの予報だが、まだのようだ。
中澤慎一作品展“Reflections”は、3月2日まで開催。

I also met many friends who live in London. It was already very late when I stood on Cambridge station again. We are expecting snow fall tonight.

Trans Eurasia Flight Eve　　560



インターネットで、明日のフライトのチェック・インを
済ませ、最後の打合わせのため、都心に出かけた。
夕方になってから“人形町”に行き、ジョージ・ロレンスと
と会った。 彼は、この秋から日本に来ているイギリス人で、
“アーティスト・ナイト”に友人が連れてきたことを切欠に
知り合った。 私たちは、不思議な“店”に入った。

I've checked in for tomorrow's flight on internet and went out. After some meetings, I went to Ningyo-cho and saw George who is English and staying in Japan since this autumn. We met at the Artist Night first.



人形町の交差点近くにある家具のショー・ルーム？である。
お客さんは、私たちだけ、ここで食事をし、コーヒーを飲んだ。
家具も個性のあるものばかりで面白い。 すべて売り物なり！
ウィンドーの向こうは水天宮、街角に提灯が並んでいる。

This is actually a furniture show room and a tearoom. We had a meal and coffee surrounded by nice furniture. They are all for sale. I could see Suitengu Shrine and lanterns outside window.



“ジョージ”は、大学で数学を専攻し卒業した。 そのまま、
就職してしまうことに疑問を感じ、日本に来たと言う。
現在は、水天宮近くの英語学校で教師をしながら、日本の
文化について勉強をしている。 特に文学に興味があり、
本格的に日本語を学ぶため、来年秋から大学に通う予定。

George came to Japan after finishing university where he studied Mathematics. He now teaches at English school in Tokyo and learning about Japanese culture. He is particularly interested in literature and going to study at university in Tokyo from next autumn.



彼は、私に見て欲しいと2冊のスケッチ・ブックを持参した。
大きい方は、木片と皮で表紙が作られたノート・ブック、
小さい方は、手漉きの厚手高級紙が束ねられた画帳。
両方ともイギリス製で、日本に来る前から描き始めている。

He had brought two sketchbooks to show me. Large one had wood and leather covers. Little one was a book of thick hand made paper. They are both English and he had started drawing before he came to Japan.



中には、デッサンやイラスト、そして、たくさんの文章が
描かれている。 エディトリアルな表現で、その時々の
感情が綴られていた。 デッサン力も確かで、繊細な若者の
心を、とても良く表現している。 彼自身、芸術家になるのが
夢だと語った。 居間に居るような、寛いだ雰囲気である。

They were full of rough drawings and illustrations as well as writing. We enjoyed talking for a while in this shop.



私は、この街から近いところで育った。 子供の頃から、
ここには、家具屋さんがあった。 建物も、家具も変わって
いるけれど、昔と同じ場所である。 古く懐かしい街並みだ。
“ジョージ”と再会を約し、次の打合わせ場所に向かった。

I grew up in a town nearby. I remember there was a furniture shop in this corner. Now the shop has a different face and filled with modern furniture. But I still feel something familiar with the corner. We promised to meet again and I left this town for next appointment.

Arctic Moonlight



早朝、ケンブリッジを発し、ヒースロー空港から飛び立って
日本に向かった。 いつものように、アムステルダムで、
乗り継ぎ、北上を始めた。 やがて空は暗くなり、満天の
星空が広がった。 オーロラが現れることを確信し、時折り
暗い空に目を凝らした。 ところが、満月が上空に昇り、
意外な明るさで、地上を照らし始めた。

I left Cambridge early this morning to arrive at Heathrow airport and got on board for Amsterdam flight as usual. From Amsterdam,the airplane for Tokyo took off in mid afternoon and flew toward north. The sky soon got dark. The evening sky was full of bright stars. I waited for the northern lights to appear. However, the full moon rose shining in the sky.



月明かりの雪原を眺めつつ、ある想いが心から離れない。
数日前、私の隣人で、友人でもある“ハワード”が急死した。
その突然で、早過ぎる死は、かなりショックだった。
20年近い付き合いで、最も頼りになる隣人でもあった。
死因は心臓麻痺、ちょうど今頃、葬式が執り行われている。
月光に浮かぶ極北の地を見ながら、ハワードの冥福を祈る。

The ground was covered with snow. Watching this scenery, I kept thinking of a person who had been our neighbor and friend for nearly 20 years and died a few days ago. It was sudden death by heart attack. Everyone was shocked as he had been active and healthy looking. His funeral took place this afternoon. I pray for the soul of Howard under the arctic moonlight.

Studio with Friendly Cats



昨日の夕方、町田市にある、シルクスクリーン版画作家、
南正雄さんのご自宅とアトリエを訪ねた。 南氏とは同じ
版画作家として長い付き合いであるが、アトリエを訪ねる
のは初めてである。

I went to Machida city to visit Mr. Masao Minami, who is a screen prints artist same as I am.



南氏は、新しい作品シリーズを制作途中で、試し刷りの
小品が所狭しと並べられていた。 制作中のアトリエは、
見ているだけで、わくわくし、制作意欲が湧いてくる。

He was working on a new series of prints. It was nice to see the studio where work is in progress.



南氏の手料理や、奥方が焼いたパン、庭で採れた野菜の
お漬物など、心温まるおもてなしを頂き、ゆったりと寛いだ
時を、楽しく語り過ごした。

Mr. Minami cooked some dishes for us all. We also had home baked bread and pickled vegetables that had come from the garden.



そして、3匹の猫たちも、心和まさせてくれた。 みんな、
とても優しく、人懐こくて、ちょっと太っている。

Three friendly fat cats also joined the pleasant time.



写真には登場しないが、白黒猫君は、ドアノブを回して、
扉を開ける芸を披露してくれ、アメリカン・ショートヘアの
丸顔君は、自慢の毛並みを撫でさせてくれた。

The black and white cat showed me how he opens a door by turing the handle. This American short hair cat is proud of his beautiful fur coat.



私の一番のお気に入りは、このライオン顔のおじさん猫。
3匹の中で、最高齢なのだが、すごい甘えん坊。
お客さんの膝に乗るが大好きで、私も膝をポンと叩いたら、
ためらうことなく、膝に飛び乗った。 改めて、南ご夫妻の
暖かい人柄に触れ、素晴らしい夕べになった。

My favorite was this lion face. He is the oldest of the three. He is a very friendly cat and always entertains guests by sitting on their knees. He liked my knees too. I was most delighted with the family's warm hospitality.

"Dinner"in Country Style


昨日からの「マックギルさん」話しのつづき、、、
内覧時間ぎりぎりに来たのに、大歓迎してくれ、夕食も一緒にと誘われた。
食卓には次々と、サラダやパン、それに鰊の燻製などが、並べられてゆく。
それらは、この部屋に相応しく、とても素敵な光景になっていった。

The sequel of "John McGill" story,,,
In spite of our arrival much later than expected, we received a warm welcome and they even invited us for a dinner.
Lots of food was brought out from the kitchen and gradually filled the table, there was salads, a loaf of bread, and bloater fish,etc. It was a beautiful scene.



菜園で採れた野菜の“サラダ”や、石臼で挽いた小麦のパン、
地元の燻製所からきた見事な生鰊の燻製、どれも自然で美しい。

Salad vegetables picked fresh from the garden, bread made from stone ground flour and smoked fishes made by local smokery.



居合わせた他の友人たちも、話しながら食事の準備を手伝っている。
ジンジャー猫くんは、開け放たれた扉から飛び込んできた虫を目で追っている。
カントリー風、純朴で気取らない、和やかで楽しい食事が始まった。

A few friends also went into the kitchen to help, while the ginger cat chased a moth that had just flown in through the open door. Soon our happy dinner started.



マックギルさんと一緒に作品を展示しているテキスタイル作家の“シーレイ”さん、
美術を特殊クラスで教えている“デリック”さん、それに絶滅危惧種・鳥類保護の
国際的機関で仕事をしている“キャロライン”さん、賑やかな食卓になった。

The members are Mrs. Shirley Spottiswoode who is a textile artist and exhibiting her works here with Mr. McGill, Derick who teaches art in a class for difficult young people, Caroline who works for an organization which protects birds that are in danger of extinction.

木製のテーブルには、木製のボールが並び、各自の木製の皿に、好きなように
燻製類やサラダを取り分け、パンを添え、ワインと一緒に食べる。
シンプルだけど、とても味わい深く、どれを食べても飛びきり美味しい。

On the wooden table were wooden bowls and wooden plates, we were asked to help ourselves to the food. So I served myself smoked herring, some salad and a slice of bread and started eating. A glass of wine made tasty food tastes even better.



話しは楽しく、話題は尽きない。 気がつけば、もう午後11時を過ぎている。
マックギルさんにお礼を述べ、一緒に食事を楽しんだ友人たちと再会を約し、
マックギル家を辞した、すっかり夜になった外気は、ひんやりと冷たい。

We enjoyed talking as well as eating of course. When I noticed it was already 11 o'clock. So I thanked Mr. & Mrs. McGill for dinner and exchanged contact details with other friends guests before getting in my car. The cool moist atmosphere had already surrounded the village.



車は“トフト”村を出て、広い田園の中を走り始めた。 意外にも、外は明るい。
月が昇り、中空で輝いている。 往き道で撮影した同じ場所に、車を停めた。
人工の光は一切なく、夕方見た同じ風景が、月明かりに浮かびあがる。
カメラで露光を伸ばして撮影したら、昼のような“神秘夜景”になった

The car was soon out of the village and running in the pastoral scenery. I noticed the moon was shining over the field, and pulled in the same place where I had stopped earlier that evening. There was no artificial light as far as I could see, the same scenery lay under the moon light. I took a photo with longer exposure. This is the result.

A Drive in Sunset



アーティスト“ジョン・マックギル”さんより、「オープン・スタジオ」内覧の
招待を頂き、今日の夕刻、ケンブリッジ郊外にある“トフト”村に向かった。
我が家からは、車で20分ほどの距離であるが、典型的なイングランドの
田園道を走る。 午後8時、まだ空は明るく、夕方の雲が美しい。

I received an invitation from "John MacGill" for a private view of his Open Studio. So, I set off to Toft, it was going to be a 20 minute car journey across the countryside. 8pm. it`s still bright, and I enjoy the view of the clouds in sunset.



気に入った風景に出会うごとに車を停め、撮影をしながらマックギルさんの
お宅に向かった。 タイムラップス撮影で、雲の動きも記録していたので、
時間がかかる。 やがて、太陽は西の空に傾き、雲に隠れた。

Everytime I see a view that I like, I park the car as soon as possible and take some photos. I take photos of the clouds movement using time lapse exposure which is usually a long process, as a result I arrived at the site a little late. Eventually the sun sunk in the cloud.



雲間から、夕陽の光が洩れ、遠くの丘に降り注ぐ。

Rays of sunshine showered through the cloud onto hills faraway.



寄り道をしていたので、到着したのが予定より大変遅くなってしまった。
庭には、夕闇がせまり、内覧に来ていたゲストたちも、帰るところだった。

By the time we arrived the village Toft, it was getting dark in the garden and the last guests were about to leave.



“ジョン・マックギル”さんは彫刻家、去年の9月29日「ブログ」の話題や、
「フォト・ダイアリー」に登場している。 マックギルさんは工房に居た。
彼の教え子で、現在、バリー・セント・エドモンドで美術の教師をしている
デリック・モスさん（右）も一緒だ。

Mr.John McGill is a sculptor who already appeared in my diary on 29th September 2005. I found him in his Studio. There I was introduced to Mr. Derick Moss who was once Mr. McGill's student and now teaches arts in Bury St.Edmonds.



居間のソファには、マックギル家のジンジャー猫くんが、寛いでいる。

Then, I met their ginger cat on a sofa in the sitting room.




ジンジャー猫くんは、「猫エッセイ」ページ・友猫ぎゃらりー００６に登場した
2年前に比べると、一回り大きくなり、ますます貫禄がついた。

He has put on weight since he had appeared in my "Cat Essay"page, Gallery 006 two years ago.



ジョン・マックギルの奥さんは、かつて舞台女優で、現在は劇作家である。
もう一匹の恥ずかしがり屋猫くんを、上の部屋から連れてきてくれた。

Mr.John McGIlls wife, "Tinch Minter" was once an actress, now she is a play writer. She brought this shy cat downstairs for me.



そして、この後、食事までご馳走になった。　つづく、、、
